Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 11 oz soft caramels or caramel bits
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup chocolate chunks

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in each egg one at a time, then stir in vanilla extract until combined.
  5. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
  6. Gently fold in semi-sweet chocolate chips and chunks.
  7. Press about two-thirds of the dough into the prepared baking pan evenly.
  8. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the caramels with heavy cream until smooth—about 1-2 minutes, stirring frequently.
  9. Pour the melted caramel over the pressed dough layer in the pan.
  10. Drop spoonfuls of the remaining cookie dough over the caramel layer, leaving some gaps.
  11. Bake for about 25–30 minutes or until golden brown on top and the center is set but still soft.
  12. Allow cooling completely in the pan before cutting into squares for serving.
