  • 2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp fine salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk, room temperature
  • 2/3 cup vegetable or canola oil
  • 2 squirts of green gel food coloring
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, room temperature (for frosting)
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1 Tbsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 1 tsp fine salt (for frosting)
  • 8 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 Tbsp heavy whipping cream, room temperature
  • Electric Green Gel Food Coloring
  • Black Gel Food Coloring

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two 9-inch round cake pans and line the bottoms with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together cake flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat together room temperature butter and sugar until light. Add eggs one at a time, followed by buttermilk, oil, green food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar.
  4. Gradually mix dry ingredients into wet ingredients until just combined.
  5. Divide batter evenly between prepared pans and bake for about 28 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Let cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
  6. For the frosting, beat together butter and cream cheese until smooth; gradually add powdered sugar, followed by vanilla extract and salt.
  7. Once cakes are cool, level them and frost between layers as well as on top and sides of the cake.
