Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups white granulated sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (sifted)
  • 3/4 cup black cocoa powder (sifted)
  • 2 eggs (room temperature)
  • 1 cup buttermilk (room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup canola oil
  • 2 cups fresh blackberries (for compote)
  • 8 oz. cream cheese (softened for frosting)
  • Chocolate skulls (for decoration)
  • Fresh blackberries (for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two round baking pans.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine sugar, flour, black cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Mix well.
  3. Add eggs, buttermilk, hot coffee, canola oil, and vanilla extract. Blend until smooth using an electric mixer.
  4. Divide the batter between the prepared pans and bake for about 30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  5. While the cake bakes, prepare the blackberry compote by cooking blackberries with sugar, lemon juice, zest, water, and cornstarch until thickened.
  6. For the frosting, beat cream cheese and butter until creamy; gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa until fluffy.
  7. Once cooled, layer the cake with blackberry compote and frost with buttercream. Decorate as desired.
